Artist Bio
Bruce Samuelson was born in 1946 in Philadelphia, PA. He studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts in Philadelphia, PA in 1968. He currently lives and works in Philadelphia, PA.
Samuelson’s drawings and paintings often include nudes. His nudes are reminiscent of classical studies and drawings, both in their muted colors and graceful poise, and still they evoke a feeling of chaos as they are often densely layered and broken up in shards of body parts. Samuelson has said that his work begins more spontaneous and chaotic than with calculated planning. Through the chaos a structure emerges by chance, and left purposefully ambiguous for open interpretations. Bodies twist and turn, creating dynamic compositions and movement. Equally comfortable with charcoal and pastel as he is with oil paint, Samuelson masterfully incorporates texture and pops of bright color into his otherwise subdued palette.
Samuelson recently had a two-person show with Jordan Wolfson titled Chaosat J.Cacciola Gallery in 2013. Collections include Saint Anselm College The Chapel Art Center in Manchester, NH, William Penn Museum, and The Philbrook Museum of Art. Samuelson has been represented by J. Cacciola Gallery since 1998.
